## Summary

Curzon splits Bengal in 1905; a Calcutta Town Hall meeting answers with a boycott of British goods, and the partition is reversed in 1911.

1905 में कर्ज़न ने बंगाल को बाँटा; कलकत्ता टाउन हॉल की सभा ने विदेशी माल के बहिष्कार से उत्तर दिया, और 1911 में विभाजन रद्द हुआ।

## Account

Curzon's partition, announced in July and in force from 16 October 1905, created the province of Eastern Bengal and Assam, Muslim-majority with its capital at Dacca, and left a western Bengal joined to Bihar and Orissa in which Bengali speakers were a minority. The stated reason was administrative. Officials' own notes show the political one: Home Secretary Herbert Risley wrote in 1904 that Bengal united was a power and Bengal divided would pull several different ways.

On 7 August 1905 a meeting at the Calcutta Town Hall resolved to boycott British goods. On 16 October Rabindranath Tagore led processions in which Hindus and Muslims tied rakhis on one another's wrists, and "Amar Sonar Bangla" dates from that year. Swadeshi brought national schools, Indian-owned mills and chemical works, bonfires of Manchester cloth, and a sharper politics: the Congress split between moderates and extremists at Surat in 1907, and some young men turned to bombs.

Many Muslims of eastern Bengal welcomed the new province and its capital at Dacca, where the Muslim League was founded in 1906. Its reversal was announced at the Delhi Durbar on 12 December 1911, and they took it as a betrayal; a university for Dacca was promised the next year in compensation.
