Bombay State becomes Maharashtra and Gujarat
Mumbai, Maharashtra

The Samyukta Maharashtra and Mahagujarat movements split bilingual Bombay State into Maharashtra and Gujarat on 1 May.
Bombay city, claimed by both, went to Maharashtra after an agitation in which more than a hundred people were killed in police firing; Gujarat took Ahmedabad as its first capital. Punjab and Haryana followed the same logic in 1966.
