Some 640 million people vote in seven phases; the BJP wins 240 seats, short of a majority, and Narendra Modi begins a third term at the head of the NDA.

Polling ran from 19 April to 1 June 2024, and votes were counted on 4 June. Turnout at polling stations was 65.79 per cent. The BJP won 240 of the 543 seats and the Congress 99; with its allies the National Democratic Alliance held 293, and Modi was sworn in on 9 June. The 18th Lok Sabha first met on 24 June.

The constituency map was still the one drawn in 2008 on the 2001 census, with each state's number of seats frozen at 1971 levels. The BJP's largest losses were in Uttar Pradesh, where the Samajwadi Party won 37 seats. Opposition parties questioned the voting machines and the release of turnout data; in April 2024 the Supreme Court declined to order a full count of the paper trail.
