At Vaisakhi the tenth Guru initiates the Panj Piare and gives the Sikh community its martial, egalitarian form.

The Khalsa was founded amid war with the hill rajas and Mughal commanders. Sikh tradition gives the day as Vaisakhi 1699 and the place as Anandpur, where Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib now stands; the detailed accounts of the ceremony come from Sikh writers of the following decades rather than from eyewitness records.

Within a century the Khalsa held the Punjab against the Afghans, and in 1799 Ranjit Singh took Lahore.
