First Battle of Panipat
Panipat, Haryana

Babur's field guns and flanking cavalry break Ibrahim Lodi's army; the Delhi Sultanate ends and the Mughal line begins.
Babur dates the battle to Friday 8 Rajab 932, which Beveridge's translation gives as 20 April 1526; many modern accounts say 21 April. Ibrahim Lodi died on the field. Babur's own figures, about 12,000 men against 100,000, are a victor's numbers; what is clear is that carts lashed into a line sheltered his matchlocks and guns while his cavalry wheeled round the flanks.
He had tried and failed to hold Samarkand; he held Hindustan instead, and set down in his Turki memoir an unsparing list of what it lacked, from good horses and grapes to ice, baths and candles.
